Ofcom Report: Children and parents: media use and attitudes report

The report is designed to give an accessible overview of media use, attitudes and understanding among children and young people aged 5-15. It also documents the views of parents/carers about their child’s media use, and the rules, tools and other ways that parents manage such use.
The document is based principally on findings from Ofcom’s media literacy tracker conducted in spring 2011. Where possible, within the sample of children aged 5-15 and their parents, demographic analysis is conducted by age of the child interviewed, by gender and by household socio-economic group.

PGDE (P) Creativity – Wordle: A Creative Approach With Words

Wordle is a toy for generating “word clouds” from text that you provide. The clouds give greater prominence to words that appear more frequently in the source text. You can tweak your clouds with different fonts, layouts, and color schemes. The images you create with Wordle are yours to use however you like. You can print them out, or save them to the Wordle gallery to share with your friends.

Some PGDE (P)/(S) students undertook an activity using Wordle during their Creativity Additional Focus Time to develop an understanding how information visualisation can be used to display words in a creative way.

The students were asked to brainstorm what the word ‘Creativity’ meant and type all their responses into a collaborative Google document.  All responses were entered into Wordle to create visual representations of their ideas.  Below is an example of one of a student’s Creative Wordle:

Wordle: creativity_rfg

To view all students’ Creative Wordles go to the PGDE (P) online area:

What are your ideas for using Wordle in Education?

LTS Chalkface

LTS have set up a blog enabling teachers to share ideas and information. While the notion of sharing top tips for teachers is one that worries me in terms of the notion of being professional practitioners you might be interested in having a look. You can find it at:

https://blogs.glowscotland.org.uk/glowblogs/cfechalkfaceblog/

Whilst we have been assured that the suggestions that are posted have been quality assured it does say that posts are made independently of LTS and represent the thoughts of practitioners so caveat emptor.

Learning and Teaching Scotland has launched an interesting new resource aimed at developing global citizenship through sustainable development, international education and citizenship within Curriculum for Excellence.
The resource is available in printed format and as online materials. It aims to provide inspiration and ideas for learning in the
