Welcome to Tumaini

“Be the change you want to see in the world.” Gandhi

“Tumaini” is a Swahili word for ‘hope’. Tumaini is a small UK based charity that supports work with orphaned and vulnerable children infected and affected by HIV Aids. We have worked predominantly in the Coastal Province of Kenya for over 7 years supporting orphanages and providing education and healthcare based projects.

The objectives of the charity are to support community groups and charities to develop sustainable projects to address and promote well being, good health and education of orphaned and vulnerable children, namely children infected or affected by HIV/Aids, and help prevent the transmission of HIV in Sub Saharan Africa.

The Boy and the Starfish

A man was walking along a deserted beach at sunset. As he walked he could see a young boy in the distance and as he drew nearer he noticed that the boy kept bending down, picking something up and throwing it into the water.

As the man approached, he was able to see that the boy was picking up starfish that had been washed up on the beach and, one at a time he was throwing them back into the water.

The man asked the boy what he was doing, the boy replied,”I am throwing starfish back into the ocean, or else they will die”

“There are thousands on this beach” said the man, “you can’t possibly make a difference.”

The boy bent down to pick up another starfish. As he threw it back into the sea he replied: “I made a difference to that one!”
