What should I do with the add-on prompts I am getting in Internet Explorer 9?

When browsing you will occasionally see messages on a Notification bar at the top of the screen about add-ons.

Add-ons provide extra features to Internet Explorer (IE) and you are usually prompted to give permission to install them, although they can install in the background and as part of other programmes. It is up to you whether you allow add-ons. They will be required for some websites, but you should be aware that they will slow down the performance of IE.

Why do I see Windows Update pop-up boxes?

Microsoft issues Windows Updates every second Tuesday of the month  (“patch” Tuesday). These updates can be related security, errors or functionality. In ICS we review these updates and then push them out to the CLT and Staff Managed Desktops one week later.

Windows Update – September

A Windows Update was released to the Managed Desktop on Tuesday 18 September 2012.

Microsoft is also issuing an Out of Band (OOB) release on Friday 21 September which will be approved for immediate installation. This release addresses vulnerabilities in  Internet Explorer. More information is available here:

Windows Updates

On the second Tuesday of every month Microsoft releases an update for Windows and other products which includes security patches. Our technical team review these updates and then one week later release these to the Managed Staff and CLT desktops.

Occasionally, a critical update is released by Microsoft which is immediately pushed out to all managed PCs.

We will post what is being included in these updates on this blog each month.

Top tip: Removable storage device disk encryption

Staff who use removable storage devices, such as external hard drives and USB flash drives, are encouraged to take a look at BitLocker To Go. BitLocker is a disk encryption and password protect feature that is included with the Managed Desktop and CLT Desktop. Read more »
