New apps – Java & Blackberry desktop manager

New apps added:

  • Blackberry Desktop Manager (Apps on Demand > Utilities)
  • Java SE 6.24 & SE 7.17 (Apps on Demand > Utilities > Java)

 Note on Java
Java can introduce vulnerabilities into a desktop and is therefore not installed by default on the Managed Desktop. Some applications require Java to run, therefore two versions are available to install from Apps on Demand. You will have to check the software that you are using to decide which version is best for you.

Users who need WebADI and PECOS should install Java SE 6.24.

Download the Apps Weekly Release for a full list of available apps.

Step-by-step guide: Accessing an app with a self-registration key

Some apps are only available to users with permission, ie SITS or a licence, ie Adobe Acrobat Pro, to use them. In these cases we will provide you with a “self-registration” key which is a unique code that you register in the Managed Desktop and then the app is released to your Apps on Demand folder.

We have produced a step-by step guide to help you do this.

How will user requirements be gathered?

Each department will be asked to nominate a local contact, who will arrange for users to complete a requirements form. We will use this to ensure the applications you require are available to you via Apps on Demand, and we have taken any special requirements into consideration.

Welcome! Let us tell you about the new Managed Desktop

The Managed Desktop offers:

  • Windows 7
  • Office 2013
  • Apps on Demand, allowing you to install the business applications you need
  • Safe environment with automatic security updates
  • Tools to personalise your desktop
  • Lower ownership costs for departments
  • Solutions for users with complex requirements

The rollout is supported by the University Senior Management Team and will reduce the support costs to departments as well as providing a more empowered way of working for users.
