SCONUL has an amazing scheme that allows you to access higher education libraries across the UK and Ireland, even when you’re away from your home university.

What’s in it for you?

If you’re enrolled in a taught course at a SCONUL member institution, you can enjoy reference use of other SCONUL HE libraries free of charge during the host institution’s summer vacation. It’s a great way to continue your academic journey, no matter where you are.

How to Gain Access

1. Proof of Enrolment: To get started, you’ll need to show proof of your enrolment. A current library card that identifies you as an undergraduate or taught postgraduate student is usually enough. Sometimes, you might need to show when your course ends, so it’s a good idea to check with the library you plan to visit beforehand.
2. Check Ahead: Before you make your visit, always check the library’s website or give them a call. Confirm their vacation dates, opening hours, and any specific documentation you might need. This will save you time and ensure a smooth experience.

Important Notes

• Reference Only: This scheme provides reference access only, which means you can use the library for studying and accessing physical materials, but you won’t be able to borrow books or access electronic resources.
• Local Arrangements: The scheme is separate from local library arrangements and the SCONUL Access Scheme, which offers borrowing privileges and runs year-round but has stricter eligibility rules.
• Participation Varies: Not all SCONUL member institutions participate in the SCONUL Access Scheme, and some libraries might temporarily opt out due to special circumstances like building work or other disruptions.

Make sure to plan ahead to make the most of this opportunity. Each library’s participation is at the discretion of their Librarian or Director, and temporary issues might affect availability. So, a quick check in advance can save you from unexpected surprises.
