Open Access Week 2024!

Its International Open Access Week 2024 (21-27 October). The theme this year is “Community over commercialisation”, a continuation of last year’s theme emphasising the benefits of Open Access to the public and academic community. The theme is still appropriate for Open Access and Open Research at the University of Dundee as initiatives such as Library-led publishing, Rights retention, and Open Research Leads Network begin to take shape.

During this week we will be sharing some new and exciting Open Research initiatives from the University of Dundee and beyond.

Follow for updates @UoDOpenResearch.

Open Research Leads Network

Along the theme of Community, we are introducing the new Open Research Leads Network. This is a group of Open Research advocates from each School acting as a link between the Library and the research community. We meet regularly with the Open Research Leads so they can provide the accurate, up-to-date information on Open Research and be a point of contact in their Schools.

Find out who your Open Research Leads is by visiting the Open Research Leads Network page on the Library website.

Open Research Blog Series

We asked the Open Research Leads to write a short paragraph about Open Research for Open Access Week. It was great to read views on Open Research from a range of disciplines as well as some practical examples of Open initiatives being employed. These written contributions will be published on our blog during Open Access Week and in weeks to come.

We extended this invitation to others in our research community and received responses from all disciplines on a variety of Open Research topics. The responses included testimonies from researchers talking about the unexpected benefits of pre-registering their studies, publishing in diamond open access journals with help from the Library and the impact of Open Data across different research fields. We’ll be sharing these contributions in our new Open Research Blog Series.

The first Open Research Blog post is a compelling testimony from two of our postgraduates who describe overcoming political and economic barriers to the latest research while living and studying in Iran. You can read their story here from Tuesday 22 October.

We’d love to hear more perspectives on Open Research. If you would like to contribute, please email discovery@dundee.ac.uk.
