It’s that time of year again: exam season is upon us! But don’t panic — we’ve got your back. From November 25 to December 8, the Main Library will be open 24/7 to give you all the time and space you need to prepare for your exams. Whether you’re a night owl, an early bird, or someone who likes to study in bursts throughout the day, our doors are open around the clock so you can study whenever suits you best.

Entry and Exit: Safety First

The library’s doors may be open 24/7, but we take security seriously. Our access control system ensures that only staff and students can enter. You’ll need to use your ID/matriculation card or the UoD app to swipe through the security gates at both entry and exit points. It’s all about keeping you and our library safe.

While we’re talking safety, remember: it’s getting dark earlier now, so make sure you have a walking buddy when coming to and from the library at night. If you’re studying late, it’s always better to leave with a friend or let someone know your whereabouts. Your safety is the priority!

Friendly Faces and Help on Hand

Rest assured, there will always be staff available at the library throughout the night to assist with any issues or emergencies. We’re here to help, so if you’re feeling lost (or just need a friendly chat after hours of study), don’t hesitate to approach us.

Feed Your Brain: Study Smarter with Brain Food

You’ve heard it before, but it’s worth repeating: what you eat and drink makes a huge difference when studying. Eating well can improve your focus, memory, and overall brain function. So what should you reach for?

  • Nuts and seeds are packed with nutrients that boost brain power.
  • Blueberries are known for their memory-enhancing properties.
  • Dark chocolate (in moderation!) can improve brain function and reduce stress.
  • Oily fish like salmon or mackerel are rich in Omega-3, which aids brain development and function.

And don’t forget about staying hydrated! Your brain is about 75% water, so keeping it well-hydrated will boost concentration, memory, and problem-solving abilities. We’ve got water dispensers throughout the library, so keep refilling that water bottle. The more hydrated you are, the better you’ll study!

For those late-night munchies, when the café is closed, there are vending machines available with healthy snacks. We also have microwaves if you want to bring your own meals and snacks from home.

Study Hard, but Don’t Forget to Take Breaks!

We know the temptation is there to bury yourself in books and not stop until you’ve memorised every last formula, but taking regular breaks is key to staying mentally healthy. Study burnout is real, and we want you to avoid it!

That’s why the library has a variety of break spaces where you can unwind and recharge:

  • The Broughty Ferry Beach Club, where you can chill out in a relaxed, coastal-themed setting.
  • Our sensory room, designed to help you destress with calming lights, and textures.
  • The leisure reading corner if you want to escape into a good book that isn’t related to your course.
  • The café, of course, is always a good place to grab a coffee and take a breather.

Need a Private Space? Book a Study Pod!

If you’re someone who likes to study solo or with a group, our study pods are a perfect option. These can be booked in advance and give you a quiet, private space to get through your revision without distractions. Whether you prefer to work alone or brainstorm with friends, we’ve got a variety of pods to suit your needs.

Stay Informed

Throughout the exam period, keep an eye on our digital signage for study tips and wellbeing advice. We’ll also be sharing helpful resources on the library’s blog to ensure you stay on top of your game.

So, whether you’re planning to pull an all-nighter or just need a quiet place to focus for a few hours, the Main Library is here for you 24/7 from November 25 to December 8. Take care of yourself and study smart.

Good luck, and see you at the library!
