Alumna Cassie Masterton is currently undergoing her Ambitious Futures traineeship.  She tells One Dundee how she has discovered opportunities in working in Higher Education through the Ambitious Futures programme.

On finishing my degree, I began searching for a job and stumbled upon the Ambitious Futures programme. Truth be told, I had never considered a career in higher education before but it sounded like a great opportunity and I was excited to learn more.  As I read more and more on the website, I realized this fitted perfectly with the kind of profession I wanted to pursue in the future.

So here I am today, after successfully applying, I am now in my first placement which is to develop a numeracy support programme for our students as part of the Academic Skills Centre. Less than three months in, I have learnt so much about how the cogs turn in a higher education institution like Dundee and have also developed valuable skills such as leadership, resilience and collaboration.  I have met some fantastic likeminded people along the way as part of the programme and I’m truly grateful for the network I have established.

Working in a university has proven to be a challenging, dynamic and rewarding role – and I am only just getting started! The Ambitious Futures programme has opened my eyes to the wealth of opportunities that exist within the higher education sector and I am confident it will prepare me for a bright and successful future working within universities.

The scheme is now open and accepting applications for a September 2020 start. Find out more and submit your application online.
