University of Dundee Automatic-Enrolment FAQs

1. What is Automatic-Enrolment?

Automatic-enrolment is a government initiative designed to help people save more for their retirement. The law requires all employers to enrol their workers into a workplace pension scheme if they are not already in one.

2. Who will be automatically enrolled into a workplace pension?

Employers will automatically enrol workers into a workplace who:

  • are aged 22 or over
  • are under State Pension age
  • earn more than £10,000 pa (this figure may change every April)
  • work, or usually work, in the UK
  • are not already in a workplace pension scheme

This is classed as the eligibility criteria.

3. What pension scheme will I be enrolled in, if eligible ?

If you are on a salary grade 1 to 6 or equivalent it will be University of Dundee Superannuation & Life Assurance Scheme (UoDSS). If you are on a salary grade 7 and above, or equivalent it will be Universities Superannuation Scheme (USS).

4. When is it happening?

The University began automatically enrolling eligible workers from 1st May 2013 and will do so every three years thereafter.  In addition to this employees will be assessed on a monthly basis.

5. I already have a workplace pension, how does automatic-enrolment affect me?

If you are already in a workplace pension then automatic enrolment will not affect you and you will continue to be a member of your existing workplace pension scheme.

6. I am not enrolled in a workplace pension, what happens next?

If you are not currently enrolled in a workplace pension and have not opted out, you will be assessed on a monthly basis and enrolled in a pension scheme if you satisfy the criteria at point 2.  If you have opted out, you will be re-assessed every three years on 1st May, unless you have opted out within 12 months of this date.

7. I have a personal pension can I have a workplace pension too?

It is possible to have both a workplace pension and a private pension so you can choose to pay them both. If you meet the eligibility criteria for automatic enrolment the University will automatically enrol you into the relevant workplace pension.

8. I am only on a temporary, short term contract, does this matter?

No, if you meet the eligibility criteria for automatic enrolment the University will automatically enrol you into the relevant workplace pension.

9. I am a casual member of staff with no contract in place, will I be automatically enrolled?

No – you will be automatically postponed from assessment for up to 3 months and at the end of this 3 month period your casual assignment will be terminated.  You can however request to be opted in to the pension scheme.

10. I am a new recruit with the university, what do I need to do?

Your letter of appointment and conditions of service will notify you of which pension scheme you will be automatically enrolled into, if eligible.

14. I have opted out, is that it?

Anyone who opts out will (if still eligible) be automatically enrolled back into a workplace pension scheme at a later date (usually every three years). This is because your circumstances may have changed and it may be right for you to start saving. We will contact you when this happens and you can again opt out if it is still not right for you. An exception to this is where you have opted out within 12 months prior to the automatic re-enrolment date.

15. If I opt out can I claim a refund of any contributions paid?

If you opt out of the pension scheme within thirty days of joining you are entitled to a refund, made via payroll, of any contributions paid with an adjustment for tax and national insurance if applicable. However, where a scheme’s rules allow for a longer period, this longer period will apply.

16. How much will it cost me to be part of a workplace pension ?

If you were to join the USS workplace pension you would contribute 8% of your pensionable salary every month and the University of Dundee would contribute 18% of your pensionable salary every month.

If you were to join the UoDSS workplace pension you would contribute 7.75% of your pensionable salary every month and the University of Dundee would contribute 22.1% of your pensionable salary every month.
