Exploring Beyond Dundee (Lake District)

I love being outdoors. The sun. The warmth (JK this is Scotland).  The stunning views.  Almost comparable to an evening in bed with Netflix and Domino’s.

In all seriousness, the one significant drawback of medicine is that I wish I had more time to do things like that I really love and take a moment to myself. So, when the medical school graciously give us precious week off planned to do exactly that and went off exploring.

The Lake District is known to be one of the most beautiful parts of the UK. It is a very popular tourist destination for locals or internationals alike. The mountainous region has stunning views and lakes (obviously) with a series of interconnecting villages/towns dotting between them.  I guess the one slightly important albeit unsurprising caveat is that this is holiday for the more adventurous at heart rather than a slow spa weekend so be sure to physically ready for long walks and some of the more challenging hikes.

For me it was just the calm needed. It was a nice detox from the many screens (like the one that you are reading this on) that we surround ourselves with. And I got some brilliant shots for Instagram – which totally made the whole trip.

Naturally the best way to see the Lake District would be to drive, it would make a fantastic trip with friends. At this time, I choose to do it with public transport and test out how accessible it would be. I took a train to Ambleside from Glasgow and used the local bus network to get around. It was easy enough so if driving Is not an option I would not let it discourage you.

I would love to know of more scenic spots around the UK so please feel free to drop me a comment/message if you have any suggestions!

Merry Christmas x

Hello everyone! I'm an international medical student, currently in my 4th year. I'm setting out to experience as much of Dundee student life as possible as I finish with my last years of undergraduate studies. I'm a closet bookworm and a foodie with an obsession of baking all things sweet. I also drink copious amounts of tea.

    1. This was a great read – and has definitely made me think I should take the train somewhere for my next trip. It’s easy to forget how well-connected Dundee is to other parts of the UK!
