With university, coursework, work, and applications for graduate jobs, the semester can be a very stressful time, often days don’t seem long enough. In for class at 9, finish class then go to study or have a meeting. Next, you need t go study and cramp 3 hours of studying into an hour and a half as you have said you could help with… Sound familiar? While it is extremely important to take up as much as you can at university and get involved, it’s also important to destress.
Here are some of the things I do to destress –
With a gym membership, I attend a gym class called Bootcamp. This one-hour class twice a week is led by an ex-marine who has based his class of marine training. This is a great opportunity to exercise and disconnect for 1 hour twice a week plus you maintain your fitness level.
During a busy week skipping a meal, simply forgetting or eating some rubbish is and extremely tempting and/or unavoidable thing. I try my absolute best not to do this. I have food in my locker on campus I can go get, but I also plan meals into my calendar. I try to make these social rather than alone as this means I can see my friends and eat, while not thinking about work, win win.
If you have read any of my other blogs, I love to travel and I find it extremely relaxing, at university students may not have spare cash but there are great ways to travel for free or very cheaply – take advantage of university trips or networking events.
It’s good, to disconnect from our devices. Which can be very hard. A method that I have found to work is to change my screen saver and background to grey. This means its ‘more boring’ and I am less likely to pick it up.
Something which I think everyone can enjoy is walking into town and either shopping or window shopping just to distract yourself from studying and stretch your legs.
If these are not enough, Dundee overs a wide range of services to help. The enquiry center and global room have mid-week events and de-stress activities. There is also the stay on course and counseling service, which are really good.
