One advantage of studying at Dundee is that it is a relatively cheap place to study. Accommodation is very cheap and the city is very walkable so I rarely ever use public transport. I would say that I use the night bus home when I have had a late night in the library or work and just cannot be bothered walking home. This blog, however, is focusing on what I think are some of the best student deals (and deals in general). Before I start I just wanted to say, even though I do like a lot of these deals I try and use them to get the stuff I would naturally buy even if the deals were not there. Over time I have found that buying stuff just because its cheaper is quite wasteful and I end up losing the money I feel like I have gained from the savings.
BOOTS Student Discount & Advantage Card
This is hands down my most used student deal in Dundee. Boots, in general, has a lot of products for skin and hair care to medication. It is a very well rounded drug store. Less than a year ago, they introduced their advantage card and 10% student discount. The advantage card is one of the best reward cards I have ever used as it gives good returns as well as different deals that give you even more rewards. In 6 months I was able to get over £40 in rewards back (although I am quite the skincare junkie)! One of my tips is to see if boots have what you are looking for online, I often order stuff and pick it up in-store for free.
Superdrug Student Discount
On occasion, Superdrug has a 20% student discount! I find this is usually at the start of the semester. They always have a 10% student discount but I don’t feel their reward system is as good as boots and a lot of their products overlap so I usually go with boots. Saying that a lot of Superdrug’s prices, especially for hair products and accessories are lower than boots. I often find myself walking in-between the two stores to see which one I can get a better deal from.
Body Shop Student Discount
Body Shop has a varying student discount but it usually 20% or 25% which I think is great, you also get a free £5 on your birthday if you have their rewards card. I don’t do a lot of shopping at Body Shop but usually get their exfoliating gloves and shower gel!
The Overgate Student Lockdown
This is an event that happens once a year in September. Most of the stores in the overrate have even high student discount and deals. There is also free food!
The Braes Wings Wednesday
If you read my blogs, I have talked about this before but its honestly a great deal. The Braes is a local pub opposite the university that has great deals throughout the week but my favourite is 25p chicken wings on a Thursday.
The Dundee University Union Skint
Skint happens at the union every Tuesday and as the name suggests, it has a very cheap entry (£1) and drinks. The only downside is that it’s on a Tuesday night, only the brave make it for their 9am on Wednesday morning.
Fuel Juice
This is the only dedicated smoothie place I know of in Dundee. They offer fantastic smoothies with a 15% student discount, just don’t forget your student card or ensure your UniDays has a photo ID (if you don’t know what that is I explain it in the last point). I am saying this because once I couldn’t my student ID at home and even though I go there all the time and the lady knows me, she refused to give me a student discount!
UniDays
If you don’t know, UniDays is the home for student discounts and there are often times where places add or increase a student discount. Using the app and getting notifications will allow you to know when there are deals.
Knowing all of this has helped me save so much money, I hope it helps you too!
