Sometimes we all have to take a day off and really care for ourselves. Whether you’ve just had a lot on your plate, or you’re struggling with some mental health issues, it is so important that we listen to our minds and bodies and take a day off when we can. In this blog post, I hope I can inspire some of you to have a self care day soon, and give you some ideas of what you can do to still be productive and hopefully make yourself feel at least a bit better!
The first step to any self care day would be to actually get out of bed at a reasonable time. It can be so tempting to stay in bed until 11, 12, even 1. However, this is going to do absolutely nothing to help you. Even if you didn’t sleep well, it is so much better (in my opinion) to get up and get some tasks done then have a nap than stay in bed for hours on end while the day slips away.
Once you’re out of bed, I’d suggest putting on your dressing gown and getting cosy while you have something filling for breakfast. If you don’t normally eat breakfast, perhaps just have some fruit or a small bowl of cereal. Anything to give you a bit of fuel in the morning is better than nothing in my opinion!
Don’t stay in that dressing gown for too long though! Once you’ve had breakfast, get in the shower and wash off whatever has been plaguing you recently. Feeling fresh and clean can help so much, especially when the last thing you want to do is get in the shower! After this, get ready for the day as usual, and put on actual clothes… not just your slouchy stay-at-home clothes!
The next step is to write a huge list of everything you want to get done either today or this week, letting out anything that has been on your mind for a long time and that you’ve been putting off. You don’t have to do this, but I always put even the simplest things on my list, for example ‘have lunch’ or ‘plan for next week’. These are things I most likely would have done anyway without the list, however being able to cross things off your list is the most important thing when you’re trying to take care of yourself and make yourself feel better!
After this, simply work through your list. If there are some really big things on there like clean the bathroom or do some meal prepping, I wouldn’t suggest putting yourself through the stress of trying to get it all done in one day unless you really feel up to it! Try to get one or two things done that you’ve been meaning to do for ages and that will help enormously. If you have more tasks that you don’t want to do in the same day, simply put a plan in place for when you will get them done.
Make time for reading, a walk outside, a nap, anything like this that you think you will need throughout the day. And of course make sure you’re drinking enough water and eating your three meals!
