I thought in order to distract myself and any readers during the lockdown, I’d share my experience of the History Society Ball which was the last big social event I attended before gatherings were banned!
The ball was on Friday 13th March at Apex Hotel Dundee, which marked our third year in a row spending our ball at the Apex! When we arrived, we had a free drink and got to chat a bit with other guests who had arrived on time (most people are fashionably late!) before we were told to find our seats.
I was lucky enough to sit with my best friends from uni and my boyfriend, and we were joined by some first years who were lovely to chat to. After a short while, our food was served which was lovely. I loved getting to spend some time with my friends outside of uni having quite a fancy meal!
As we were finishing our food, the ceilidh band Reel of Fortune were setting up. I love watching them set up as I’m just a huge fan of live music. It also gets me so excited for the ceilidh! Being English, I never actually experienced a ceilidh until I came to uni and now they’re one of my favourite Scottish things. If you’ve never been to a ceilidh please take the next opportunity to have to go to one! Even if you can’t dance (like me) or struggle to follow directions (like me) it’s such a good laugh, as long as no one is taking it too seriously!
The rest of the night was spent ceilidh dancing and chatting to all my friends which I absolutely loved. I really enjoy having the chance to celebrate the end of the academic year with all my closest uni friends.
I hope this post encouraged some of you who have never been to a ball to perhaps attend one next year! I am also aware that many balls and ceilidhs have been cancelled recently, so if you were planning to attend one but it was unfortunately cancelled, I’m so sorry you had to miss out on such a fab event as they always are! I hope you’re all doing well in isolation and keeping safe. Soon we’ll be back to normal and able to attend as many ceilidhs as we like!
