There’s been an earthquake… Ninewells Hospital is out of action… We need our student Doctors, Dentists and Nurses to help in our hour of need.

That’s what our new healthcare students had to face last week. Our new batch of Medicine, Dentistry and Nursing and Health Sciences students took part in a major incident scenario, their very first task as students.

The event was planned by a medical student during a summer scholarship, in collaboration with other students, and supported by academic staff and student facilitators.

Students were put into groups and given the task of setting up an emergency care centre as soon as possible.

First they had to decide what role they would play in the disaster. They only had 20 minutes to get to know each other and find out what skills they already had.

They then had to work out a floor plan of the emergency care centre and triage. The tasks were time-critical and required good decision-making, negotiation and good communication.

They were not alone though. Academic staff from the schools were there to guide them and listen to their ideas.
