We love hearing about the great things our former students have been up to since they graduated. One of which is Daniel Shand, who graduated with an English and Creative Writing Degree in 2011. He’s coming back to the city to share the secret of how to win a book prize.

In just a few years, Daniel, from Kirkcaldy, has gone from graduating, to winning the Betty Trask Prize for his debut novel Fallow. The prestigious £10,000 prize, awarded for a first novel of ‘outstanding literary merit’ by an author under the age of 35, was presented at the Society of Authors’ annual ceremony in London this summer.

Fallow tells the story of two brothers, bound by a terrible crime.

Bleak; funny; alarming; sad; it works on so many levels, managing to be at the same time a road trip through Scotland, a modern Biblical parable and a tense psychological thriller with echoes of Iain Banks and Cormac McCarthy.

Judges comments for Fallow

Daniel will be at Tonic on Wednesday 25 October to talk about his book, but will also be free for advice to unpublished writers and novelists. Head along for a coffee and a chat with our alumnus.
